On Saturday 5 July 2003, Lance Armstrong set out from Paris on the Centenary Tour de France. After 3427.5km of torrid and backbreaking racing - through northern France, across the Alps, the Pyrenees and back up to Paris - he returned having achieved his mission. Armstrong won LE TOUR DE FRANCE and became only the second rider in the race’s 100-year history to win the event five times in a row and only the fifth rider to win the event five times in a career.
This was the fastest Tour on record and will long be remembered as the most combative and closely fought.
Now you can relive every highlight of this epic race, with this three-hour highlights package. LE TOUR DE FRANCE 2003: THE HIGHLIGHTS takes you into the heart and soul of the world’s toughest and most beautiful sporting event.
Compiled and produced by SBS Television, it features exclusive footage from the race and never-before-seen interviews. Commentary is provided by SBS’ cycling expert, Michael Tomalaris, who is joined by the ‘voice of cycling’, Phil Liggett.
Watch as almost 200 riders extend their bodies and minds to limitless levels and battle through three weeks of team rivalry, frightening crashes and unpredictable conditions – moving with the peloton, fighting pain, anguish, joy and ecstasy; jostling for road cycling’s most prestigious prize.
Marvel at the record number of Australians in the race, from veterans like Stuart O’Grady and Robbie McEwen, to the fresh new stars in Michael Rogers and green jersey winner Baden Cooke as they rub shoulders with the cycling elite – Ulrich, Armstrong, Vinokourov, and Hamilton – and reinforce their positions as a veritable power in road cycling.
